the Beachy Head Project

[back to front page]

Hey, here's something I forgot to mention. While working out these lyrics, I had intended to burn a CD of Beachy Head tracks only, as a sort of re-imagining of what the debut mini-album would've been like had Beachy Head not become Easyworld. While converting the MP3s to Wavs and recutting them slightly, I noticed that a couple of songs appeared (very, very, tenuously) to lead into one another. Go get the Beachy Head MP3s off AudioGalaxy and, what's that you hear at the end of "100wt"? Sounds suspiciously like the start of "So Young, So Freaky" that's been clipped into the wrong MP3! And what's that hiding away in the closing milliseconds of "Feensong"? Well, er, it might just be a bit of a distorted click thing, or it might just be the starting moment of "3 Minute Pop Song" (I said it got a bit tenuous...)

Anyway, a loose order of songs discovered, I set about rebuilding a full tracklisting around what I had. This is how (and why) I decided the songs worked best. Click on the songs to get to what I've got of the lyrics - ( ) means either sung in background/or spoken, [ ] with text inside means I'm unsure of the lyrics, and [ ] with nothing inside means missing part.

1: Musin Wit Alek I figured this strange (and thus, entertaining) set of samples would be useful for the band to get onstage to in a live performance, and with that image securely in mind I put it at the front of the 'album'. Also can be found labelled (Correctly?) as "Music with Alek" (lyrical source: Fine Revolution)
2: Feensong Pt 2 I love this song. I thought a slow, subdued start to the proper songs which fast accellerates into some catchy guitar-pop would be a nice way to begin and indeed, it's more than reminiscent of the start of the "Better Ways..." mini-album with the slow, rising Lights Out introduction. There is no Feensong Part 1 (Factual source: Paul Annett).
3: 3 Minute Pop Song Well, as mentioned earlier, this was easy to position because the end of Feensong seemed to contain a small, small segment of the intro. Whether this means that it was ordered that way on purpose, by the band/producers/etc. or that whoever made the MP3s had them in this arbitrary order on the CD, we will probably never know. But here it is anyway.
4: 100wt Hmm, so we are confronted with the slow dodgy version of Hundredweight. I decided it'd fit well here, a slow more lo-fi song than the previous two and echoing again "Better Ways..." where track 3 is a slower number. As an aside, I love the samples on this version.
5: So Young, So Freaky Again, followed "100wt" if only because the MP3 suggested it should, but also to bring things back to speed after the slowness.
6: Lights Out Oh, my favoritest of Easyworld songs, comparatively unaltered (compared to Hundredweight) on "Better Ways..." and rerecorded as a lowly B-Side to Bleach! How sharper than a serpent's tooth to be maligned so, going from album opener to CD-filler...but anyway, after the "click" at the end of "So Young, So Freaky" it seemed like the bleepiness of the phone sample in Lights out would be a nice way to lead back in from the definitive silence left rather than jumping straight back into into some serious guitarage. Note an MP3 of this is not downloadable because the only actual difference to the "Better Ways..." version is the removal of extra talking clock sample at the start.

According to various sources, it has emerged that, despite being labelled Beachy Head, this was actually a re-editted version of the Easyworld track that was intended to be a Fierce Panda release, and was sent out by them as a promo. I've left it here so that anyone looking for the beachy head version of "lights out" might get the information they seek. No version exists. This is, as noted above, near-idential to the Easyworld Better Ways... version because it is, in fact, a slight re-edit of it designed for a single release that never occurred.
7: Me And, finally, a slow, introspective, delicate end. I believe that this might make the 'album' seem deceptively subdued and melancholy, but on the other hand, surely a good album should be an emotional rollercoaster that energises you, uses up that energy, then leaves you exhausted by the end. OK Computer is a good example of this, where by the end of it you feel drained on many levels. Origin of Symmetry has a similar effect. So yeah, that's my arty reason why the depressing track goes at the end ;-) As an aside, so strong was fan-reaction to this track, it was re-recorded during the TIWIS album sessions and is set for release on the "Junkies" single.

100wt
I wear,
You down,
I walk into the room,
And it gets much colder.

Each limb's,
A tonne,
Then my hundredweight head,
And I sink through the carpet.

I am sunk,
So low.

What's the matter with you?
You wear your monday morning face, I know,
You think i'm a waste of your time, hello,
I'm no-one you'd want to meet.

I grind you down,
I walk into the room,
And it gets much darker.

Each limb's,
A tonne,
Then my hundredweight head,
And I sink through the carpet.

I am sunk,
So low.

What's the matter with you?
You wear your monday morning face, I know,
You think i'm a waste of your time, hello,
I'm no-one you'd want to meet.
So Young So Freaky
Crash back in your seat and decay,
I feel I might be hated that way,
Someone elses' problems are up with me.

I woke up late as a middle aged man,
I slept through everything I had left,
So young so freaky, so little sympathy.

And no-one gives a shit for us,
Who'll save me?

So Young, so freaky,
How [] your [],
How long will I be,
So Young, so freaky.

Lil' anecdote for your cherubic face,
I spent so long staring down at my shoelace,
I did not see the juggernaut.

I cut my cake with a double-edged sword,
I feel so grown-up, so fucking bored,
So young so freaky, so little sympathy.

And no-one gives a shit for us,
Who'll save me?

So Young, so freaky,
How [] your [],
How long will I be,
So Young, so freaky.

[You're the/Yeah the][] x 4

So Young, so freaky,
How [] your [],
How long will I []...

Lights Out
After all is said and nothing's done,
Where are we then?
It all comes crashing around your feet and
Does that change a thing?

You said it's the best day of your life,
Well that's so damn true.

Now the lights are all out,
And the systems are down,
For once in my life,
I think we're getting somewhere...

Somewhere near the end of everything,
What do you care?
As one by one the lights go out and
The sun comes up again.

You said it's the best day of your life,
Well that's so damn true.

Now the lights are all out,
And the systems are down,
For once in my life,
I think we're getting somewhere...

Now the lights are all out,
And the systems are down,
For once in my life,
I think we're getting somewhere...
Me
Another drunk platonic evening,
Is falling into morning time,
I curse myself again.

Above and silent are you sleeping,
Below and lower am i sitting still,
A deluge overhead.

Done it now my friend,
And are you still my friend?
'cause i don't know how we'll be,
The morning after me.

This condensation soaked net curtain,
The bleached and icy kitchen scene,
A stupid head in hands.

You came across so goddam friendly,
A final loss of self control,
A bargain basement move.

Done it now my friend,
And are you still my friend?
'cause i don't know how we'll be,
The morning after me.

A melancholic sad reminder,
The kettle boiled an hour ago...
