denofgeek

My longest-held position is as a writer for Den of Geek, where I review TV and movies, conduct interviews and write features.

Ever since I started freelancing I’ve been part of Den of Geek’s core writing team. I’m one of their regular TV reviewers, I’m responsible for features, interviews and reviews related to Marvel’s movies, and I write a weekly column revisiting episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation, which is apparently one of the site’s most popular features. I’ve written literally hundreds of articles for the site, so below you’ll find a small selection of the ones I’m most proud of.

Marvel’s cinematic universe: 50 geeky spots and Easter eggs In which I watched every Marvel Cinematic Universe film to date and pulled out the background jokes, geeky references and anything else that might’ve gone over (or under) your head in the cinema.

James Gunn Interview An interview with writer-director James Gunn, promoting the release of Guardians of the Galaxy.

Is one shot, one kill right for Video Games? A sponsored article written for the release of Sniper: Ghost Warrior 2, based on a suggested title. (The company had no input into the final text of the piece. For better or worse, that’s all me!)

From Comic Books to Video Games A sponsored article written for the release of DC Universe Online, looking at how video game adaptations of superhero comics fare. The ones that worked, and the ones that didn’t. Again, while the title was suggested by a sponsor, the choice of and content of the article is all me.

The hidden treasures of Scott Pilgrim Vs The World Ten geeky references you might have missed from videogame-inspired cult classic, Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World.

Christopher Markus on writing Captain America 2 & 3 An interview with one half of the writing team of Captain America: The Winter Soldier and its then-unnamed follow-up. It was supposed to be a double-header but Chris McFeely had dropped off the line, and the PR machine waits for no man. Even if it’s the guy you’re interviewing.

Explaining the X-Men: Days of Future Past One of the site’s most-shared pieces ever saw me trying to untangle the continuity of 2014’s X-Men: Days of Future Past. Turns out a lot of people had a lot of questions, which I attempted to answer.

Drew Pearce Interview An interview with Drew Pearce, the writer of Iron Man 3 and UK sitcom No Heroics. One of my screenwriting idols.

Revisiting Star Trek TNG: The Dauphin It’s tough to pick out just one piece from over three seasons of retrospectives, but this is a good example of what they’re like.

Dirk Maggs Interview Ahead of the Hitchhiker’s Guide Live tour, I picked Maggs’ brains about everything he’s ever worked on, from Hitchhiker’s Guide to Broken Sword.

In Praise of Adam Buxton’s Bug Adam Buxton is one of my favourite comedians. This piece is about how much I loved the TV version of his music video show, BUG.
