Let’s worry about Star Trek

31 07 2008

Some of you will know that I’m regrettably a massive Star Trek nerd. In fact, I’m so massive a Trek nerd that I think J.J. Abrams’ remake/reboot of the franchise is going to be horrible even though the world at large knows almost nothing concrete about it! That’s nerd-thinking for you. To that end, I’ve written up my reasoning in an article on Den of Geek, in the true Den of Geek style - an annotated list. Take it all with a pinch of salt, this article is nothing if not self-aware.

5 Reasons to be worried about J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek.

Paul Cornell Interview

25 07 2008

One year on (and a couple of months) from our much-celebrated Bristol Comic Expo Interview with the superstar team of Kieron “Warhammer” Gillen and Jamie “Negative Burn” McKelvie, Seb and I, accompanied by our Comics Daily partner in crime Julian, interviewed Paul Cornell, top Doctor Who TV scribe (and writer of Captain Britain, the actual best Marvel comic being released at the moment) My contribution to the interview, if you haven’t guessed, was mostly the comics stuff. Should interest nerds and norms alike.

3 Best Wolverine Moments

14 07 2008

Latest Alternate Cover column sees me choosing my 3 favourite Wolverine moments, then calling them the “best three” in order to stimulate some rage in the reading public. The thing I learnt from writing this article: over 12 years after buying Wolverine #99 from a small WH Smiths in Wales, I still have never read Wolverine #100. How wrong is that?

How I spent my Saturday

13 07 2008

Largely, I was fighting with PHP concerning an hilariously frustrating bug in Comics Daily’s new overhaul which meant that something was causing certain div elements to disappear but only when the page was accessed using a bookmark url (in this case, with the #respond element being the target). Christ knows what was causing it - I suspect it was that something, somewhere, was causing some broken inheritance or something, but eventually I fixed it by changing a div to a span. It’s very hard to explain what thought processes led me to that situation, and even now, I don’t know WHY it worked, only that it did.

Anyway, the upshot is that we’re running a new design over there now, in addition to fully migrating it to a new server and URL (without killing any previous links. That was a task in itself let me tell you.) Probably not of great interest to anyone, but there we go. Moving a blog from wordpress.org IS possible, it’s just about the most maddening process one person can undertake in their entire lives.

I rewarded myself in the evening by taking a break from work and reading Brief Lives, which (I’m sure any Sandman readers don’t need me to tell them) was amazing, and all the better for being in Absolute format. Sometimes it amazes me that I spent so long getting to Sandman, and other times I feel much better than I did, because now I have it in a brilliant format. Unfortunately, Volume 4 isn’t out until the end of the year. I suspect I’ll be going back and re-reading the first 3 before then.

Space Invaders Extreme review

As the title suggests, I have reviewed Space Invaders Extreme on the Nintendo DS for Den of Geek.

In Estate

3 07 2008

Today, I rushed back home from my weekly comics-purchasing expedition to meet the estate agent and view a 1-bedroom flat which Nikki had discovered was available not too far from where we live now.

My usual practise when dealing with estate agents is to ignore their every word, except when I speak to them directly, because it’s well-known that these people speak only in lies and riddles designed to confuse you into signing a contract. Today, when I first entered the flat to discover that I was standing in the bedroom, I was told “the layout of this flat, you either love it or you hate it.”

Needless to say, I hated it, but was what I was told really true? Do some people go into that flat and go “Finally, a front door in the bedroom! Just what I always wanted!” because I suspect that they don’t. Of course, if using the bedroom as a thoroughfare to the rest of the flat wasn’t an enticing enough prospect, there’s always the fact that the bail hostel was right next door…

It’s going to be a fun couple of months, I can tell…

Micro Mart #1011

3 07 2008

This week, there’s a contribution to another communal article, this time about “Stupid Computer Problems.” My piece documents the ridiculous fight I’ve had trying to make my computer stop rattling. Luckily, someone at <a href=”http://www.quietpc.com”>quietpc.com</a> read it and is sending me a noise-reduction kit to try out for my troubles, so you can expect a review of that to show up in the pages of Micro Mart soon!

Micro Mart #1010

Oops. Forgot to mention this. Last week’s issue contained the first instalment of “Betawatch” which is a monthly column where I review beta versions of software to help you all stay on the bleeding edge of software releases. Pretty snazzy, no? If you’re reading this and you’ve got beta software you think would be appropriate to review, please leave a comment and let me know.
